Greenways are routes or paths through the landscape, providing humans with access to special places, and preserving or enhancing natural and cultural resources. The Greenways mission is to create dynamic interactions between nature and culture, and promote the active participation of the people of Hancock County in restoring the balance between the two.

The Greenways project will also promote landscape literacy in order to help citizens “read” the local landscape by layering designs with an interpretive thread.  The plan was completed prior to Hurricane Katrina, and is currently being used for many land use decisions for recovery in Hancock County.
